Ongoing search for accessible Toronto studio spaces

Sunday morning outdoor dancers have been asking for an indoor option for the Winter. I LOVE dancing Sunday mornings too. It has filled my cup through the Spring, Summer, and Fall, and this year it didn't feel right to move this class online (which is what I have done the past two years). I am sorry that this online offering will no longer be available to those who have wanted and needed it. The good news is that I have many 5Rhythms colleagues teaching online classes every day of the week, and I hope you will go explore their work, and be nourished by their offerings.

While I am looking forward to indoor Sunday morning dances this Winter, I am also heavy-hearted that I was not able to secure a wheelchair accessible space for these 5 classes. I searched high and low for accessible spacious venues that are suitable for our practice, and available for us on Sunday mornings (and for a few one day workshops I am offering in 2024), and I came up dry. I visited many locations, and due to size, floor quality, sound issues, availability, and several not truly being accessible even though they claimed to be - none were a good fit. The truth is that we have an extremely disappointing lack of accessible dance spaces in Toronto. Ultimately, I decided to move forward with the 1st floor of Dovercourt House as a temporary solution for this season of indoor Sundays, and I will continue my search for accessible venues. Please send any and all suggestions my way.

If you would like to experience 5Rhythms and you dance in a wheelchair, I am grateful to have Roncesvalles United Church as the wonderful, accessible, and long-time home for my weekly Wednesday and monthly Saturday classes. Also, all of the 2024 and 2025 weekend workshops with visiting teachers that I am organizing, will be at the gorgeous Beach United Church - another beloved wheelchair accessible venue.

I will continue to advocate for venues to make the changes necessary to become accessible, and I will continue my search for accessible venues for our practice. I deeply hope to be able to find an accessible home for future Sunday indoor classes and smaller workshops.

With love and commitment to offering movement spaces for all people,
Layah
